South America | Peru | Northern Peru | Trujillo – the challenge of teaching art

The carnival still continues in Peru. Last weekend 12 of us volunteers participated in a parade in Huanchaco. We were all dressed as butterflies, with body paint and huge wings. One of our Peruvian friends worked on the costumes for about a week, he is very artistic and came up with some incredible ideas. (I will try to upload some pictures later)
We also had another mad water fight last week. This time it was with the kids from Bruce Peru. They were suddenly all over me tipping water over my head, I had no chance to escape and it is still a myth to me where they found all the bottles and cups to carry the water. I got absolutely drenched, but had so much fun. It is quite amazing how strong these little, thin kids are, when they are trying to keep hold of you so the others can soak you with water.

Yesterday I had the kids work on another ambitious art project. I got them to glue dried peas and beans and sweet corn onto cardboard in the shape of lizards, fish and turtles. At first the started gluing each other’s hair and the little ones kept putting the sweet corn in their mouths. It was an absolute mess and I was worried they would choke on the bits. I practically lost my voice trying to shout louder than they did to get them to listen to my instructions. I needed the help of 4 other volunteers to get all 60 of them to work. In the end the pictures came out so well, I was absolutely amazed. I had planned to hang them on the wall in the art room, but they were so proud of their work that they begged me to be allowed to take them home to show their families… of course I couldn’t say no.
The art classes are a real challenge and they keep costing me a lot of money, as I have to pay for and find additional supplies myself, but it is really worth it.

Time is just flying by; it is hard to imagine that I’ve only got a few weeks left. I will really miss the little voices shouting “Senorita Sigi”, whenever I step out of the door. I am also still desperately trying to finish the new web site for Bruce, the progress is slow and I’m finding it nearly impossible to concentrate on the work with so much else going on around me.
