South America | Peru | Northern Peru | Trujillo – my travel plans
Here are my travel plans.
Ill be going further north to Mancora first, a beach/ surfer village, right next to the Ecuadorian border. We (Debrah, one of my fellow volunteers from Scotland is coming with me) will then travel back down on the coast to a place called Chiclayo. There is a museum called Senior Zipan, which is highly recommended because it is one of the rare places in Peru, where they exhibit the actual treasures they found. At pretty much all of the other sites in Peru, grave robbers have stolen everything of any value before the archaeologist managed to get there. Apparently Chiclayo also has one of the best markets in the whole of Peru.
We will then be leaving the coast, heading towards the jungle on an 18-hour bus ride through the Andes, followed by a 4-hour taxi ride to Yurimaguas. There well try to get a passage on one of the cargo boats travelling up the Amazon to Iquitos.
You have to bring your own hammock and find a space on board to attach it, apparently it gets very crowded. This trip is classified as one of the most adventurous things to do in Peru and I am seriously excited.
We will spend a night and a day on board and then get off to visit Lagunas national reserve for two nights. It will take 2 more nights and 3 more days on the cargo boat to finally reach Iquitos. The food on the boat is apparently lethal for our stomachs so well have to try and take as much food as possible ourselves. I really cant wait, just have to make sure I buy a very good mosquito net.
I will pop back to Trujillo for one day before finally flying back to England, just to say a final good-bye to my lovely children and pick up my laptop.
