South America | Peru – Arriving in Trujillo

South America | Peru – Arriving in Trujillo

After a long flight and an 8 hour bus ride through a completely deserted landscape I finally arrived at Trujillo on Wednesday night. The Bruce Peru campus is quite big, but VERY basic. I am sharing a dorm with 3 other girls, it is filthy and the beds look like they are about to colapse. The roof is made of wooden sticks but luckily it practicly never rains in Trujillo so at least I am not getting wet. The bathroom is falling apart as well and after 8pm we dont have any water (not even to flush the toilet). In spite of all this, I am loving it already. The kids come in for breakfast every morning at 8am and if they want food they have to attend classes afterwards. Every volunteer has to teach a couple of classes (english, math, art, history etc.) after breakfast… which is pretty hard, considering that we have to teach in SPANISH.
!!!
There is a big ground for the kids to play in in their break, this is my favourite time because they come and cuddle up to you or just want you to play with them. They are so cute and I am desperately trying to learn their names but there are between 45 and 60 of them and I am struggeling. They are mostly between 6 and 12 but there are a few really young ones as well, they are just adorable!
At noon lunch is served, it is a bit like trying to feed a house full of monkeys.
There are more classes until 3pm and then the kids leave.
We use the following few hours to prepare lessons for the next day and relax a bit because from 6 to 9pm we are teaching english to adults (who pay for the lessons so that we can use the money to fund the kids shelter).
From Monday I will also be working on the redesign of our website (www.bruceperu.com), looks like it will be a challenge!!!!

It is boiling hot here during the day and I ve already burned myself pretty badly while walking around on the streets of Trujillo trying to find some more kids to feed and educate.

Well, so far for now. I hope I will manage to update this diary every few days so if you are interested, check back here.
