North America | United States of America (USA) | Southern States | Tennessee – Half a world away….
….Half a world away, I sit in a university library connecting to my soon-to-be home, Chennai, India (the former Madras). From the web weather service, I see it’s still very much the rainy season, with a 70% chance of rain, highs in the low 90s, lows in the mid 70s, and of course, near 100% humidity. The thought of a first trip to India is so daunting that I have found myself inventing reasons to procrastinate departure a few more weeks; some reasons legit, some not so….and this is something I’d dreamt of for years! Amazing how these things change when they begin to become reality.
Everything I have read has told me that nothing I have read can prepare me for India. That India is not where you go to find yourself, it’s where you go to lose yourself; that at times it’s like the worst acid trip ever, completely destroying one’s concept of reality and self; and then, that this is part of its appeal and uniqueness. Countless travellers have related that they return home in relief, only to find themselves missing it weeks later and hankering to return.
