I saw two great theater productions in Chicago.
On the 31st we went to the Lakeview neighborhood and saw a preview performance of the Eclipse Theater Company’s 4 BY GUARE. The four John Guare one acts were great and well performed at the attractive old ATHENAEUM THEATER.
On the first we bit the bullet and went to a STEPPENWOLF performance of PURPLE HEART. We felt a little touristy going to a Steppenwolf show, but we found it full of locals. I was more interested in attending a production of the 25 year old actor founded theater company (that has had so many tallented and later famous company members) than seeing the show.
The theater was a perfect space for the type of theater they do. The problem with the company is the importance is placed on the actors, not the play. They do this by performing meaningless plays that allow the talented actors to shine. It is the deliveries of the actors, not the words of the script that are important. I am accustomed to the play being the focus of an evening in a theater. I won’t say that Steppenwolf is doing it wrong, but it does feel different.
After the play we went back to the Palmer House Hotel to the neat bar TRADER VIC’S. It is a great bar that has been in operation all over the world since 1934 and is home of the original mai tai drink. We were lucky enough to be there on a Thursday when the mai tai’s were half price. I kept a coaster from the bar and I still find the global locations of the other bars odd –Abu Dhabi, Al Anin, Atlanta, Bahrain, Bangkok, Beirut, Beverly Hills, Cairo, Chicago, Dubai, Emeryville, Fukuoka, Hamburg, London, Marabella, Munich, Muscat, Osaka, Singapore, Taipei, Tokyo.
After the drink we headed out into the city to BLUE CHICAGO, a neat old blues club. We stayed there for a few hours to listen to the live, local talent play. It was very enjoyable. We returned back to the hotel at far too late of an hour, after spending too much on drinks, but I wouldn’t change much about the evening -or the trip in general.
