(Post script to the last entry) And how could I not mention the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception? This is a travel diary, not a family scandal website. The Catholic Basilica is the most incredible modern church I have ever seen. Probably the only modern church I’ve ever seen worth noting. When it comes to churches, anyone who’s set foot in Europe will tell where to find them. And that in the 20th century just nothing was built to last like a Gothic cathedral. But those people have never seen this marble masterpiece. My brother informed me that it was paid for entirely by donors, members of the Catholic Church.

The Basilica has uncountable little chapels for every nation on the earth than has any Catholics at all. Each one is impeccably crafted, no detail spared. The strange thing, though, is the Jesus above the main altar – with long, wavy blonde hair and a muscular torso some could mistake the Lord for Robert Plant.

While Brother and Sister-in-Law showed me around and Lucy tottered amongst the pews playing peek-a-boo, Sexton stayed in the Basilica cafeteria drinking coffee. He wrote a poem about the church, its gift shop with crosses of many shapes and sizes, and the vending machines selling Lays Potato chips. His only disappointment was the lack of a cigarette machine.
