Europe | United Kingdom (UK), Great Britain | Scotland | Outer Hebrides – Day 22 – Loch Baghasdail
Another glorious day… I just potter along enjoying the sunshine, detouring occasionally off the main road that runs down the spine of the island. Plenty of nice sandy beaches on the west coast to just sit and listen to the birds. I notice the preferred choice of football shirt among the youth has switched from Rangers to Celtic… must have crossed an invisible religion line at some point!
Arriving at Loch Baghasdail, I check in with tourist information about ferry times and discover that the next Caledonian MacBrayne ferry (for which I already have a ticket) to Barraigh (Barra) is on Thursday… the day I need to be back on the mainland! Luckily there is a passenger ferry from Ludag in about 4 hours so I figure I’ll go down there and wander about… that is until I discover Iain and Paula camped in a lovely spot behind the public toilets! After agonising for a whole 3 seconds over changing my plans, Paula and I head to the pub for a couple of pints. We find fantastic entertainment in the form of a slightly mad bloke who is fond of wandering the streets of Glasgow in ?160 aftershave, a tartan shirt and a long black coat… you’ve been warned! The hour long cycle to Ludag is more like an hour and a half, I make it with seconds to spare.
A short distance form where the ferry docks is Barraigh airport where I pitch my tent for the evening. It’s not as odd as it sounds, the airport is actually a long, flat beach with hard packed sand where the plane lands at low tide. I get chatting to Phil, a first time touring cyclist and we decide that to fully celebrate this momentous occasion we must go to the pub!
