Europe | United Kingdom (UK), Great Britain | England | London – Past History
My mother left Britain at the age of 7 in the days when it took six weeks on a ship to get to Australia. She had her 8th birthday party on the boat, and first set foot on Australian soil in Freemantle. She then re-boarded the ship and they sailed around the Australian Bight and through Bass Straight to Sydney. She says she remembers passing under the Harbour Bridge vividly, absolutely positive that the tall funnels of the ship weren’t going to fit under it.
They then made port in Sydney and my mother and her family disembarked to their new life in New South Wales. My mother has not stepped foot in a foreign country from that day to this – 3 months short of 50 years.
Until today, that is. This morning she flew out from home in Darwin and made a short stop in Singapore. Then she will have reboarded the plane and tomorrow morning at 6.00am British Summer time, she returns to the land of her birth.
More importantly, though, it’s two years since I’ve seen her, and I’m so excited! We’re also planning a trip around Europe, including two weeks in Britain, then to Austria, Italy, Southern France and Spain for 4 – 5 weeks. I’ll keep you all posted as to how we get on.
