Europe | Turkey | Istanbul – Last Month
Last month I worked in the 22nd Istanbul Film Festival. I’m ashamed to say that I couldn’t find the time watch any film . I didn’t count exactly but I think 200 films of different parts of the world was here. And there was at least 30 films that I’d really like to see. The problem was that I was working 9.00-18.00. Then I was going to my students.Well, I could go to last seances at 24.00 but I was tired and just needed to sleep.
Anyway I can hear you to say ‘come on, tell me about the festival’. As always the festival had some different sections. For example the country of this year was India. There were several Bollywood films.
In the section of Memory, there was two directors; William Wyler and Yasurijo Ozu.
Talking about the memory something that I’m really sorry that I’ve missed was the Sunrise from 1927. The speciality of this silent film was that its been showed in a concert saloon accompanied by two great pianists from Turkey. I was sure and then heard also that it was very good. Another film that I regret having missed is Salome. But this one will be in Istanbuls cinemas in a while. So I still have a chance.
There were documentaries, films from many countries, some wellknown directors like Brian De Palma or some young directors in the part of Young Stars of the Cinema. Everything everything. National and international competiton films were very interesting also. Uzak which won the National competition has won the Jurys Price in Cannes too. Ill find a way to watch it. After all these you may think in fact ‘you have no idea, you didn’t watch any film’. And you’ll be right. But I’ll take the revenge next time.
