In one of the churches I visited I asked a poor blind elderly lady who moved slow and painful if I could help her bridge a small rise in the entra way. She turned and I saw her kind face and clouds in her puplils. She kindly shook her head and told me [ No mijo , gracias[ I walked into the church and I saw several statues of Frias with the represention of death on one side of them and the cross on the other side. One showed a cross with Spanish lances resting agains it and in the Frias left hand a plam. The another statue showed a frias with a cross in his right hand and a skull in his left hand.
I made the half cirle inside the church and noted that several of the status were dark skined. Christ was sometime pictured dark as was his mother. The Frias and some of the mary in contast were light skinned. I started to walk back to the entrance of the church when I saw in statue of christ in a burial position encased in glass. He had a sad look on his face, his eyes open and tears rolling down his cheeks. Then I heard a very fain prayer on my right. It was coming from the lady whom I tried to help into church. She sat on a pew crying telling god how much she loved him.
Tears were rolling down her cheeks. She asked god to have mercury on her and to help her. I was touched by her sincerity and moved by her faith. I dropped a twenty in the cups that laid by side her and told her
[ este es de dios[ this is from God and walked out.
