Australasia | New Zealand – Wellington

So, we Taupo where I believe I wrote you last and headed to a place called Napier on the east coast of the North Island. It was a beautiful beach town with really old houses and cool deco. The lonely planet we have said it was in competetion with Miami beach for art decco, but that puzzled me a little bit as it looked nothing like Miami (thanks god) and it wasn’t anything spectacular to be honest. We were unable to find any hostels located centerally downtown so we went to one over the hill in the outskirts. It was located near the port and was full as well, except they offered us a campervan site. I feel like I’ve already writen this. So I will move on….On our way driving toward Wellington we saw a few hitchhikers all heading the wrong direction though. I’ve been wanting to pick people up, and somewhat share our good fortune with the car. So we drove on and as luck would have it there was a girl with her thumb up. I pulled over and she hopped in going to Wellington as well! (well really it was more her good luck as she got a free 5 hour trip with the wonderful anna and mariah)hahah but ya so that was really cool her name was evon and she was 26 from Germany. We talked the whole car ride which is unusual becuase anna and i tend to jam to our music most of the time… But I asked her about the Berlin wall cause she’d mentioned it while we were talking and how she’d been a girl when it came down. This kind of stuff always facinates me becuase to be honest i have no idea about most of this stuff as politically conscious as i try and be. But she said that she’d been 10 when it came down and she remembered going to the bank to collect money that the government owed everyone on the eastern side of Germany. So they qued for hours to get the money (400 each) she said that she remembered skipping down the road and being amazed at all the color that was now occupying the store windows… before eastern germany was really grey, they only had an orange each on christmas and strawberries maybe once a year. No bananas nothing exotic. This blew my mind, I had no idea about any of it…Thought i would share that tid bit of information…Anyways the drive was long but beautiful winding through the mountains and hills of New Zealand, sadly i had to concentrate on the road ahead but would occasionally get a glimpse…beautiful..We arrived into wellington in the late afternoon….it looked just like san fransico driving in ( the bit from mill valley driving into the city with the water on the left and hills on the right) it was a beautiful welcome…we checked into a backpackers downtown giving the car and our backs a few nights to recoop from several uncomfortable nights sleeping (or not)…We’re currently at the Base backpackers on the Sancturary floor, a floor for all girls with lovely lovely beds hair dryers everything soo nice!! we decided we wont be able to make it to the south island which we are really upset about…but we discussed it and decided realistically it wasnt worth it the money and we have soo little time left unfortunately! well thats all for now. I think we’re going out tonight, last night we went out and it was completely dead. This guy who could be our dads tried to pick us up and say he’d open his coffee shop for us if we wanted to join him…but theres a rugby game on tonight, New Zealand vs Australia so we’re keen on watching that! until next time much love peace and pura vida
