Australasia | Australia | New South Wales | Sydney – Working in Sydney
Sorry it has been such a long time since our last entry – have been busy job hunting and it’s not as easy as you might think. But more about that later…
Spent a week at Bridgeman Downs again at the end of October which was great. Filled up on nice food and wine. It was much hotter than when we were there in July, and they had some fantastic thunder storms while we were there. After that, we legged it back down to Sydney in a week, travelling via the inland route. Stopped at Tamworth, the Country Music Capital of Australia, and got a photo of the giant golden guitar. Also made a trip through the Hunter Valley, and visited the Rosemount Estate Winery, and Lindemans.
It has been very exciting here since we’ve been back in Sydney with all the Rugby World Cup matches. We went to see the final on the big screens in the city. Hooray for England!!! You’ve never seen so many dejected Aussies as we did at the end of that match – I guess they’re not used to losing things like us poms. The fireworks on the harbour bridge were great. Hopefully we’ll see more of those on New Year’s Eve. It was typical pommie weather too – it poured with rain and we got soaked. Actually it’s been like that here for over a week now. It seems to be warming up again today though. 19 degrees seems pretty cold to us, especially after Queensland, but I guess everyone’s shivering away now in England. It’s cold here when you have to put a jumper on.
Well, it has been pretty difficult finding a job. Dave is still looking for an IT contract, although he has got some work to do at the weekends. We have both been demonstrating products for Sunbeam (an Aussie company a bit like Phillips or Tefal) in various Sydney stores. Coffee machines, grills, irons etc. I am working in a Department store called David Jones from next week, selling fragrances (Gucci, Versace, Dolce and Gabbana, Hugo Boss). Have had training but there’s lots to learn. Have got to wear lots of make-up which is not usually my style, but I’m getting used to it. Should get to chat up lots of wealthy men though!
We’re living in a hostel in the inner suburbs at the moment. Hopefully we will be able to rent an apartment when we both have full time jobs, but we’ll see how it goes.
Will write again soon and let you know what an Aussie Christmas is really like…
