Asia | South East Asia | Thailand | South Thailand | Ko Pha Ngan – Full Moon Party

What can I say?
Arrived on Monday for a Full Moon Party on wednesday, but it turned out to be on Friday because the start of the Buddhist 3 month retreat…going to be awfully tight getting to Chiang Mai by Monday morning!

The first night we went for a quiet drink on the beach – or so we thought… we had one drink and then another, and I think we might even have had a few after that…walking over the beach there is music everywhere, and people everywhere… and it is nice and warm and yes, going for a swim sounds like an excellent idea! Who cares that we’re fully dressed and it is after midnight, we’re just taking a dip anyway…

The next morning I feel very old – not because of a hangover (surprisingly absent from it’s suspected rendez-vous), but after talking with my young guy in the bungalow next to me: he is nursing a hangover and a rather bad one – it has all the makings of one of the famous Samsung whiskey, coke and red bull hangovers – and it is! He tells me he knew it was going to be hard on him the next morning but hey, what do you want? On my question why not drinking something else then, he delivers the ‘ageblow’: hey, it’s the cheapest and fastest way to get drunk!
Heavens, I really must be getting old, because that notion is completely absent in my current book. Rather than targeting getting drunk as fast and cheap as possible, my objectif is to have great evening and enjoy myself…if I get drunk in the process? Fine! If not, fine as well!
Am I really that old?

It’s good there is beach volleybal around, it keeps me occupied! Because it has been confirmed again – I’m not a beach babe!
Even with a good book, I’m getting bored lying on the beach…maybe that’s why my tan still doesn’t look like much…
Inspired by the fire shows in Raileh I get myself another beach attraction: tennisballs on a rope, to do funny figures on the beach! It’s a hilarious pass time, especially as I keep hittin myself with the balls on my head…practice, practice, practice is the key they tell me….

The actual Full Moon Party is a lot of fun: there must be thousands of people on the beach, all dancing and drinking and having fun. We meet loads of people and spend most of our time dancing on the chairs…
But God, what do we look stupid with our glasses in our hands when around 7 the sun comes up in less then 10 minutes. Somehow it’s not the same when the day light’s back and the mystery of the night is gone…

We’re going home, leaving the afterparty for the more courageous ones. We need some sleep, before the taxi winks us off to the boat, back to the mainland…
