It is so hot! Around 38 degrees centigrade – the kind of heat that makes it hard to breathe, ’cause the air is too thick and hot. I have been holed up in my hotel room, a bit like a vampire, only coming out at night…!!! Great hotel to be holed up in – it is like a 70’s Holiday Inn, all brown and tacky. It’s really cheap, the rooms are huge, it has aircon and satellite TV, what more could I want. So, I’ve been watching loads of movies and catching up on CNN – I’m not missing much. It’s called the Deema Hotel (Rajha, you gotta tell Deema about this one!!!).
I’m here until Friday – I get my Vietnam Visa on Thursday, and am hoping that it’ll only take a day to get my Laos Visa. Have changed my route. I’ve decided to go to Cambodia first, hopefully I’ll be there by the weekend, in Siem Reap checking out the ruins of Angkor Wat. Then on to Saigon, up to Hanoi and then on to Laos. From Laos I then go to Chang Mai, in north Thailand. I will be missing the Songkran Festival (the one where everyone goes mad and chucks water over each other), but hey, can’t do everything.
Farang are obviously a novelty in Khon Kaen, I’ve been getting stared at a lot and everyone who speaks any English has been wanting to try it out on me. I met a novice monk called Tong, he speaks really good English. He has been a monk since he was 12 – eight years. I was wondering why everyone around us was taking such an interest in our conversation, when Tong explained that monks were not allowed to talk to women, but because I was farang it was okay. I reckon he was practising a little bit more than just his English, as he’s going to stop being a monk when he finishes University!!!!
Next posting from Cambodia – I hope!
