Asia | Nepal | Kathmandu Valley | Kathmandu – The return

Upon my return to Kathmandu, more terrorist hell broke loose. In the past two weeks there have been no less than six incidents of bombs being planted around the city by Maoists. The bombs have been hung on banners in busy centers of the city, at a factory and at various political figures homes. Luckily, only one serious injury has occurred, but it is still a bit frightening. In addition to the bombs, Maoists killed another 30 some police officers and abducted over 70 more. The army has now moved into position in the Rolpa district, a heavily Maoist area and are trying to flush them out. I hope it works or this is gonna turn into a full scale civil war. It is awful to hear the tales of death and woe going on around me and I feel a bit guilty for feeling lucky to be here at such an incredibly volatile time of change in this country. I mean how often does a person get to be witness to all these crazy happenings? Oh yeah and just a few minutes ago I had to run out of this office and into the courtyard as an earthquake started shaking the building. Not to serious, I think the epicenter must have been far away. There was a 4 point something earthquake this past week in the west of Nepal, but we didn’t feel it here so this one must have been a little closer. My mom always says not to ask what next, but I swear it gets harder and harder not to do so.

As all these things unfold, tourists are almost non-existent here. I am the only person staying in my hotel and only occasionally do I see tourists in the normally crowded streets of Thamel. It is getting weird around here that is for sure. On a good note, my students all passed their exams so I guess I am a decent teacher. I was having my doubts, but I now know that all their supposed confusion was just to waste time so I might forget to give out homework. I guess students are the same all around the world. Well, I think I am going to go pack my daypack with some essentials incase another earthquake happens in the night. I’d hate to be stuck without any clean underwear hahaha¬Ö..I guess mom’s voice is always with me.
