Asia | Japan | Northern Honshu | Niigata – And my ears were opened
Today I am in Niigata, on the Western coast of Japan overlooking the Sea of Japan. I traveled to the top of the Toki Messe building, which is the tallest building in Niigata. On the 30th floor, there is an observation level from which you can see the city, the mountains, and the sea. On the way up the elevator, a wonderful thing happened, my ears ‘popped’, but not in the normal way. Suddenly, on the observation deck I realized I could understand the people around me! Maybe not word for word for meaning, but suddenly I could understand the words phonetically! I could hear words, and even whole phrases that I recognized! Now, to just learn the meanings of these familiarities, and I will be doing great!
