Asia | India – xmas & new year
I am having an excellent time for the festive season, after leaving Varkala on the 23rd i caught 2 buses to catch the 10:30 ferry, with my dutch friends to Allappey. We arrived 10 minutes late and had to catch a rickshaw to the next ferry pier. the ferry was great, we sat on the prow and had great views, passing the hugging mama’s ashram and beautiful scenery.
We arrived in Alleppey to find a fair in town, so after getting a cheap hotel we went exploring. there was a wall of death, a circus and a snake girl that was so bad it made us laugh for ages. On xmas eve we hired a motor launch for 2 days to explore the backwaters, and after getting supplies in set off.
We had a very lazt time, eating fruit, plum cake and trying the local toddy, fermented cocconut juice !!!! watching the sun set & trying to climb palm trees. Xmas morning we were invited to the boat drivers house for breakfast and had fresh filter coffee…. then had another lazy day cruising the backwaters.
Boxing day and we got dropped off on a pier to catch the ferry to Kottayam where we overnighted then caught a bus to Kumily. got a great hotel (coffee inn) and met up with Lindsey from wales who i saw in Calcutta and varkala.
got myself a massage, went for a full days trekking in periyar tiger sanctuary but was dissapointed with the lack of wildlife. then on new years eve got dressed up as a clown and went with Lindsey and his girlfriend Tara to a hospital to entertain the patients & nuns. had a great time then went up in the hills & met Frank who showed great hospitality with beer and food. finally ended up at the western cafe where they let us have a party, 14 people from 11 countries and we sang songs played with balloons and got a bit ‘tipsy’. great night had by all.
said goodbye to my dutch friends this morning and am off to cochin tomorrow.
