Asia | India | Orissa – reflections on puri
i have been in puri for a week now and am almost back on budget. puri is a very laid back place, with not a lot of action, the beach is nice and the resturaunts good.
went to see the sun temple at karnark yesterday which is very impressive, it is a bit like a temple from kajharo, in that it depicts karma sutra type scenes, and is hailed as one of the best temples in india, but had scaffolding around half of it as it need a lot of repair, and i have scene better temples before.
i hired a bike and took my new friend robbie, and after the temple we went to see an old saddhu friend of his. this saddhu was 81 and everything you expected, he was wery shanti (peaceful) and i heard how the old (?) saddhu had died recently and have been invited to the funeral on dec 4th, so am very interested in going. this also coincides with a dance festival happening at the temple, so should be a very interesting day.
aterwards we popped in to see some old friends of robbies, that he hadn’t seen for 5 years, and recieved a very hospitable welcome, even though i felt like the visiting attraction as all the village children came to see the ‘man from england’ they have kindly invited me to stay the day i go back.
shopping is very cheap, i was offered a string of ‘pearls’ today for 200 rupees (3 pounds) bought some shocking blue trousers for 100 rupees, then i had a few hours on the beach, back to the hotel for a shower and am now off for dinner.
so until next time …. shanti
