Asia | India | Indian Himalayas | Uttar Pradesh | Varanasi – varanasi
after a 18 hour overnight train journey, i arrived in varanasi on saturday and got a room in the old yogi lodge for 150 rupees a night. nice clean room with hot running water.later while exploring i came across a tabla maker and his 12 year old son played me some great music. I went to see his small factory and arranged to have a free lesson the following day.
After an early night i got up early and saw the sunrise over the ganges from a boat. rowing up and down it is an incredible sight, to see the burning ghats where the dead are cremated, and just a few metres away people are bathing and brushing their teeth !!
Then went to see a few temples, (hanuman, laxmi and durga) before seeing some wonderful silk weaving. i couldn’t resist and bought some wall hangings. back at the hotel i befriended the manager who took me around on his 500cc enfield. I then went and had a tabla lesson which i enjoyed and bought a pair, with lessons. So i will now be staying here a little longer than planned.
spent a few days wandering the city and having lessons, its a lot harder than it looks but i seem to be picking up the basics. have been to dinner with my new friends and saw recycling at its most basic, although they live on the 2nd floor of a small block, they keep a goat in the coridoor to eat the waste vegtable matter.
visited sarnath, the birthplace of buddhism and saw the wonderful lion capital from 2 B.C.
varanasi is a facinating place but its time to move on.
