Asia | India – how pushkar got its name
here’s a story i was told in mallamapuram.
The god bramah (the creator) threw a flower (called a push) from his hand (called kar) and where it landed a lake formed. this is the site of pushkar, and how it got it’s name.
later he was looking forward to puja and his wife went to get ready. Well, geing a woman she took a long time and the time for puja was fast running out, and Bramah needed a consort to celebrate puja, so he changed a passing cow into a woman so he could continue with puja.
When his wife returned she was not very happy to see another woman with Bramah and in her rage she put a condition that Bramah could only be worshiped at this one site. Bramah in turn said she could only be worshiped on a nearby hill, and only if the worshipers bought water from the lake.
This is why there is only one temple in the whole of India dedicated to Bramah.
