Asia | India – arrived in puri
i have now arrived and settled in Puri on the eastern coast of india, after a 12 hour overnight train ride from calcutta. have found a very good hotel (gandhara on c.t. road)where i have decided to go upmarket. for 350 rupees a night i have a hot shower, tv and a very good room. it is less than 5 minutes from the beach, and is very clean.
Puri is very different from calcutta, much more laid back, less hassle and free from pollution. i went into town today and have already made a friend (robert) who invited me to his home today where his wife made banana & coconut chapati’s. his home is very simple, just a hut with 2 sides made with bricks, the other 2 sides from mud (which he says gets washed away with the monsoons) and a thatched roof. he has offered to guide me around if i wish (to konark, the lake & the jungle) and i have arranged to meet him on monday.
tomorrow i will go down to the beach for my first swim since arrival, the guide book mentions a very strong undercurrent so i will have to be careful. theres not a lot happening around here so will be making a effort to meet other travellers to find out whats going on.
found out that motorbikes are very cheap to rent (only 150 rupees a day) so will do some exploring next week. theres no problam riding about, only finding out where your going as there are few road signs. still i have come for adventure so if i get lost it will be an adventure finding my way home.
the local restaurants seem excellent, especially fresh seafood, i had a plate of delicious king prawns last night for 100 rupees (less than 1.50) and lobsters start at 3.50 sterling. all this talk of food is making me hungry, so i am off for dinner now.
