Antarctica – Freezing in a Pillowcase
Skirt party at Scott’s Base tonight. The guys were dressed more flamboyantly and received more attention than the few females that showed up. I didn’t think to bring a skirt when packing to come to Antarctica so I made do. Found a long pillowcase with lace trim and cut the end and sewed in a drawstring. It was so long it became a dress instead. As I was waiting at the shuttle stop for a lift to Scott’s Base in one of these huge orange bus-like vehicles that move slower than a turtle with tires taller than me, the absurdity of the situation struck me. Here I am in Antarctica standing at a bus stop in nothing but a light fleece jacket and a pillowcase, surrounded by guys in drag. There is a guy in a Hawaiian shirt wearing half a ripped bed sheet / sarong standing next to his brother who is also wearing a Hawaiian shirt and bed sheet sarong and has obviously been showering in fake tanner. My male roommate is wearing a long flowing velvet brown skirt and a red t-shirt that is too short. My next door neighbor is in an afro wig with a skintight black mini dress and pink rhinestone glasses he either borrowed, brought, or stole- don’t know which is more disturbing. Other neighbor is in a pillowcase skirt I also fashioned, with suspenders and a polo shirt looking like he shouldn’t be allowed to dress himself. All of us freezing in zero temperatures. If the bus breaks down and we die on the way they will find us wearing these ridiculous outfits and probably start requiring psychological testing for all would be employees in the future.
Who would have thought I would need a skirt in Antarctica. Good thing someone brought this fancy pillowcase.
