Africa | South Africa | Western Cape | Cape Town | Klein Karoo – what’s this about Dutch and cycling???
That saturday bought my ticket to Durban for the monday and went on a rather long & winey lunch with Nico. Always a dangerous thing to do!
I’ll fill you in why: Nico is managing a veterans semi-professional Microsoft cycling team. They would be leaving the next day for a cycling tour in the south of South Africa, on the Garden Route and in the Klein Karoo. Sofar no problems.
At the end of our lunch however, he got a phonecall from one of his oaks of the team that the mechanic had dropped out and that there was some space in the combi… lucid as he was after a few glasses of wine, he proposed that I’d come with them to see something of the country… and lucid as I was after a few glasses of good SouthAfrican white, I said yes!
So there I was the next morning at 4am, dragging my tired body out to the combi + trailer with ‘my’ new team…quite a feat, seeing that we continued our partying until about 2am…
I soon turned into kind of ‘road manager’ or rather ‘manusje van alles’ in Dutch, meaning I doubled as the driver of the combi+trailer while the team was battling on their bikes, cook, shopping girl, psychologist, masseuse, … all the while having loads of fun and seeing some of the most stunning scenery in South Africa.
The Swartbergpas especially was amazing. Also learned that 6 guys in a combi is a lot more fuzzy than 6 girls, honestly! Getting 6 grown up (or so they pretend!) guys to agree on a decision to be taken takes it really out of you… and then, after half an hour you finally think you got it and 5 minutes later, there will be one of them going: ‘ja, but shouldn’t we….’
It’s good I’ve become such a gentle and patient person during my travels 😉
