Africa | South Africa – 6 girls in a combi…
Then, off to SouthAfrica, for wedding number 3.
I wouldn’t want to surprise you with a smooth flight with no hassle – another Marlies-style departure therefore, this time racking my nerves at 5.20 in the morning!
Having only a one way ticket to SouthAfrica, Swiss refused to let me board… and no matter what (and I’ve been creative: signing a release to pay for my return and fines if sent back, buying an extremely expensive refundable ticket, amazing what you can come up with at that time of day if you have to!), the only way to get on the plane and not loose my ticket alltogether was to buy an outbound ticket…. only to find out that a return Joburg-Bangkok was cheaper than a return, so I’ll probably be back in Africa some time next year!
6 girls in a combi (jaarclub – all studyfriends that came down for the wedding as wel), driving around Klein Drakensberg and Krugerpark, I can hear you thinking, Oh, oh! But no, we did not end up smashing each other’s brains in or catfighting! We had a great week, with lots of braai, good SouthAfrican wine (which greatly enhanced the gossip and old stories) and even more wildlife and mountains.
A great week, ending in a great wedding weekend.
A true Out of Africa-bush wedding in a gorgeous setting – a game lodge that boasts the big five but also a pool for between the game drives and an outdoor shower under a few palm trees with a view of the river… and rooms with fourposter beds and old fashioned baths on little clawed feet. After 5 months of backpacking it was like arriving in paradise…
The wedding ceremony out in the bush next to the river, with the sun setting over the hills resulted in quite a few glinstering eyes – must have been the sand blowing in our eyes…
I must admit, it was kind of odd seeing them all leave again to go back home (except for one smart one that went on travelling in Africa) and ending up all on my own in Johannesburg (Joburg for intimi). But hey, loads of stuff to take care off, been wining&dining with new south african friends (Nico for one), visited Soweto (which actually is the size of a good sized city rather than a township!).
I even got a job in the local Dutch pub, which I then refused as quickly as I got it: with work starting only at 5m, I figured I’d end up spending more money during the day playing golf and shopping around then I’d make in the evening…. Better to get out there and do my divemaster course (DM)!
